PTSD screening tool

Do I have PTSD?

This screening tool is designed as a guide to determine if you are having an adverse response to a traumatic event.

A high score on this checklist does not necessarily mean you have PTSD. These questions were developed by Laura van Dernoot Lipsky (2009) ‘Trauma Stewardship’ and may help you to identify different areas you are struggling with.

Do you have intrusions about the event in at least one of the following ways?

Yes  No  Feeling helpless and hopeless
Yes  No  A sense that one can never do enough
Yes  No  Hypervigilance
Yes No Diminished creativity
Yes No Inability to embrace complexity
Yes No Minimizing
Yes No Chronic exhaustion or physical ailments
Yes No Inability to listen
Yes No Dissociative moments
Yes No Sense of persecution
Yes No Guilt
Yes No Fear
Yes No Anger and Cynicism
Yes No Inability to empathise or numbing
Yes No Addictions
Yes No Grandiosity: an inflated sense of the importance of one’s work

If you answered YES to any of the above questions, and if your experiences are interfering with your work or home life, you may be suffering from PTSD. However, a licensed psychologist can make a more accurate diagnosis. Talking to a mental health professional and learning new coping strategies can help you to manage your symptoms when triggers or new stressors arise.
